Andrew Coombes has considerable experience in all aspects of cataract surgery and has edited and contributed to a successful textbook on this subject. His experience includes patients with complex or difficult cataract such as those with glaucoma, uveitis, previous injury or advanced cataracts. He routinely performs small incision sutureless cataract surgery (phacoemulsification) typically under local anaesthetic (either drops alone - topical anaesthesia, or by injection - sub-Tenon's anaesthesia). Most patients do not need to stay in hospital overnight and would be expected to have improved vision within 24 hours. Much of Andrew Coombes' research has been in the field of cataract surgery and he has participated in a wide range of related meetings and courses. He is a long standing member of the UK & Ireland Cataract and Refractive Surgeons society (UKICRSS).
