An eye examination and consultation is a straight forward painless process. The first visit is particularly detailed and may require up to 45 minutes (follow up visits are typically shorter that the first consultation). Much of the examination is performed using a slit lamp, which is a specialised microscope mounted on an adjustable table  with a chin and forehead support for the patient.

The eye check includes vision and eye pressure testing (to detect glaucoma).  In order to completely examine the eye it is often necessary to dilate the pupil. Dilating drops take approximately 10-15 minutes to work but can blur the vision for up to 3 hours. You must not drive during this peroid and you may wish to consider the timing of your appointment with this in mind.

Things to bring to the consultation:

» Any recent opticians report or glasses prescription ( if you are contemplating refractive surgery please also bring any    previous reports).
» A list of any current prescription drugs you take.
» Your current glasses if you have any.
» If you wear contact lenses to the consultation you are likely to have to remove them so a lens case and solutions is    useful.
